ONE BIG THING: WE NEED TO FULLY FUND OUR PUBLIC SCHOOLS |

Today, the Senate education committee is finally holding a public hearing on House Bill 2, the school funding package passed by the House nearly a month ago. The Senate released its 225-page rewrite of the bill just 30 minutes before its hearing, which is expected to last late into the night.
This school funding package was promised as one half of a “Texas Two-Step,” to be passed in tandem with the school voucher scam that was fast-tracked and signed into law by Governor Abbott on May 3. While the billionaire donors and their enablers who pushed the deeply unpopular voucher scam have celebrated their victory over Texas kids and teachers, districts across the state are laying off staff, closing campuses, and having to decide which student services to fund or cut.
Here’s the thing: even if public ed funding passes, there’s a good chance it will be too little, too late. The Senate version of this bill provides nearly $1 billion dollars less than HB 2. It also drastically cuts HB 2’s basic allotment — the amount of money public schools receive for each student — by $340.
Our kids and teachers are worth more than a weak funding package that doesn’t address the needs of our public schools.
