Catch up on everything from Lincoln Square today all in one place.
If you've been waiting for those Trump checks in the mail, well, good luck. Because for all his populist posturing, Trump's economic plan ain't for you, Rick Wilson writes.
Let’s dispense with the lies and the Fox News spin. This $5.7 trillion boondoggle isn’t about you or your family. It’s about Trump’s buddies in Silicon Valley and Mar-a-Lago getting another yacht. It’s about Elon Musk doing a celebratory keg stand on the grave of your tax refund. It’s about billionaires paying less and blaming the deficit on some poor kid in Appalachia who eats with the help of SNAP.
And it gets worse. While corporations are busy dancing on their quarterly earnings calls, the bill guts Medicaid and Medicare — the very programs that prop up the health and dignity of millions of Americans, especially in the red-state, rural counties where MAGA voters live and vote and die.
Lisa Senecal and Andra Watkins discuss how Sen. Mike Lee and Rep. Mary Miller (R-Ill.) have introduced the “Interstate Obscenity Definition Act.” It’s a White Christian Nationalist’s wet dream (sorry). It seeks to redefine and standardize the legal definition of obscenity across all states.
Any guesses what kinds of things Mike Lee finds obscene?
This should scare the hell out of anyone who has an art book on their coffee table, or any woman who decides to wear something flattering — really, anyone other than straight married couples should be raging against this effort (not that straight married couples are safe from it…they aren’t).
And … a special message from Lincoln Square's new CEO and Executive Editor, Susan J. Demas:
Whether it’s ICE violently holding a young girl’s face to the ground as her mother was arrested in Massachusetts or progressive streamer Hasan Piker being detained by border agents after aggressively criticizing Trump, the message from his regime is clear: Dissent will not be tolerated. And it also can be prosecuted.
The reason Trump keeps deploying these authoritarian tactics of censorship and brute force is simple: He’s afraid.
He’s afraid of books and ideas he doesn’t understand. But most of all, he’s afraid of us — the American people. He wants to rule over us. He wants to decide what we read and what we do. He wants to decide how many pencils we get or how many dolls our daughters are entitled to.
