"SAPD Chief on thwarted school shooting plan: ‘very disturbing things found’,” San Antonio Express-News' Nancy M. Preyor-Johnson and Jacob Beltran -- "San Antonio Police Chief William McManus has revealed disturbing new details about a foiled school shooting plot at Rhodes Middle School — and announced the case marks the first terrorism charge ever filed in Bexar County.
During a news conference Thursday morning, McManus said there were “very disturbing things found in the mother’s house,” though he didn’t indicate what they were.
McManus also said investigators don’t yet know if the boy was armed when he showed up to school with a mask and tactical gear.
He said that when Ashley Pardo was contacted by police, the school and Child Protective Services, she appeared “dismissive and unconcerned with her son’s behavior."
"Her behavior is not only dangerous, it’s abhorrent, especially as a parent,” he said.
Pardo, 33, was arrested Monday and charged with aiding in the commission of terrorism. A judge set her bail at $75,000. She has been released on bond. Her 13-year-old son is charged with terrorism, officials said. He's being held at the Bexar County Juvenile Detention Facility.
She’s accused of helping her son gather supplies as he planned to carry out a school shooting in San Antonio.
“This started with a tip, and we take every tip seriously,” McManus said, adding that the case is being handled by the department’s new Behavior Threat Assessment Group with the help of agencies across the city.
He said the boy and his mother would both have their day in court, and officers and partners in the community would work to protect the community.
On Monday, Pardo's son, a student at Rhodes Middle School, was arrested off-campus after the San Antonio Independent School District Police Department investigated online posts he had made, according to a letter sent to families by Principal Felismina Martinez." SAEN [ [link removed] ] ($)
