As a proud graduate of SDSU, I join in celebrating San Diego State University's historic achievement of R1 Carnegie Classification designation, placing it among the top research institutions in the nation and one of just 19 that are also recognized as Hispanic-Serving Institutions. SDSU is the first California State University to achieve the designation. The City Council proclaimed May 13, 2025, as “San Diego State University R1 Carnegie Classification Day” in recognition of their leadership in cutting-edge research across multiple disciplines addressing real-world challenges.

SCRIPPS CELEBRATION SYMPOSIUM

I was honored to speak at the “Past, Present, and Future of Oceanography” symposium in celebration of Dr. Margaret Leinen’s retirement. As she concludes her tenure as Vice Chancellor of Marine Sciences and Director of Scripps Institution of Oceanography, we recognize her impact on ocean science, global climate, and environmental policy. From day one, Dr. Leinen prioritized proactive engagement with communities vulnerable to climate and pollution impacts as she leveraged the knowledge, tools, and resources of the Scripps faculty and researchers. I wish Dr. Leinen well in her retirement, knowing her leadership and influence will continue to inspire the environmental sciences community.

GEARING UP FOR A GREENER
SAN DIEGO

SANDAG’s annual Bike Anywhere Day was another great success! We appreciate all the cyclists who stopped at any of the 100 SANDAG pit stops across the region to connect with other riders and for choosing to pedal to their destinations instead of driving. Your efforts help reduce air pollution and show how fun, healthy, and sustainable biking anywhere can be. 🚴‍♀️

#TEAMLACAVA IN THE DISTRICT

#TeamLaCava rolled up their sleeves and joined PB Town Council Graffiti Busters to clear graffiti, stickers, and old posters around Pacific Beach. With scrapers in hand, they cleaned everything from street signs to newspaper boxes, leaving the neighborhood looking cleaner and brighter.
