Olympia’s Greatest Hits: Tax More, Achieve Less, Blame Everyone

If the 2025 legislative session felt like a political rerun, that’s because it was — complete with the usual plotline: Washington Democrats clinging to big government, tax hikes, and smug condescension.

In this sharply written guest editorial, a Shift WA podcast host takes a torch to Olympia’s unserious leadership. The author argues that far from being some master plan, Democrats’ policy failures — from rent control to handing out unemployment checks to striking workers — are the inevitable result of a political class more concerned with slogans than solutions.

The state’s response to real crises like crime, housing, and economic stagnation? PowerPoints filled with buzzwords and recycled ideas from past sessions. Forget innovation — the goal seems to be impressing MSNBC hosts and Twitter mobs, not solving problems for actual Washingtonians.

And if you question their proposals? Well, clearly you just didn’t make it to slide 28E of their “Why the State Knows Best” presentation.

According to the author, the issue isn’t intelligence — it’s a complete lack of skill, motivation, and backbone. Olympia is now packed with performative politicians more fit for a casting call than a crisis.

The final image says it all: watching Democrats roll through another session of overreach and incompetence is like watching your dog roll in goose poop — frustratingly familiar, predictably gross, and ending badly for everyone involved. Read more at Shift WA.

WA Democrats Pick Sanctuary Over Security

While Democrats in Washington cling to their sanctuary city policies and refuse to cooperate with ICE, the numbers tell a different story — and not one that flatters their “compassionate” open-border rhetoric.

According to the latest Customs and Border Protection data, Washington ranks second among the 14 northern border states for illegal border crosser apprehensions under the Biden administration — with a staggering 120,720 apprehensions. Only New York has more. Vermont, Maine, and Montana — all blue-leaning or sanctuary-happy states — round out the top five.

In total, nearly 1 million illegal entries have been recorded at the northern border during the Biden years. Yes, the northern border — the one nobody talks about because the media and Democrats are too busy pretending the chaos stops at Texas and Arizona.

Despite the administration’s laughable claims about a “safe, orderly migration,” apprehensions have increased every year, hitting record highs in 2024 in multiple states, including Washington. And no surprise: there’s no wall, barely any surveillance tech, and agents are spread so thin one might be patrolling hundreds of miles alone.

Yet somehow, this underfunded northern border still managed to catch 1,216 suspected terrorists, the most in the country — which means the actual number slipping through could be far worse. But go ahead, Seattle — keep refusing ICE cooperation. What could possibly go wrong?

Even as President Trump declared a national emergency at the northern border and sent in military support, Democrats stuck their heads in the sand, focusing solely on virtue signaling while the actual border — all 5,525 miles of it — went largely unprotected.

Washington Democrats have made a choice: sanctuary over security. And with illegal crossings and terror-linked apprehensions spiking, the rest of us are left living with the consequences. Read more at Center Square.

Olympia to Employers: “Take Your $3.5 Billion and Get Lost”

In yet another masterclass in economic self-sabotage, Democrats in Olympia killed House Bill 1210 — a bipartisan-supported tax incentive that could have brought a $3.5 billion nuclear manufacturing facility and hundreds of high-paying jobs to Richland. Led by Jamie Pederson (D), lawmakers waved off the opportunity, clinging to their favorite talking points about “corporate giveaways” while ignoring the real-world impact on families and job seekers.

The company behind the project, which supplies next-gen nuclear tech, was ready to invest in Washington — a state with the potential to lead in clean energy innovation. But thanks to Olympia’s knee-jerk hostility toward business, that opportunity is probably heading elsewhere. It’s a familiar theme: progressive lawmakers who claim to champion working families routinely block the very projects that would lift them up.

Washington’s not losing jobs and residents because of the weather — it’s because our leaders are stuck in a mindset where businesses are villains and economic growth is suspect. If the state keeps treating job creators like political punching bags, the only thing we’ll be attracting is a bigger outbound U-Haul line. Read more at the Washington Policy Center.
