How would this bill work? It would allow formation of local “predator damage control districts” to collect money from property owners for spending on "predator control." These animals could range anywhere from bears, to coyotes, foxes, beavers, or other species. This money raised would then fund the federal “Wildlife Services” to kill Oregon’s wildlife that are deemed a threat to private property, without having to use or consider non-lethal methods.
You’ve probably heard of the “Wildlife Services” program before: it’s known for its cruel and unnecessary killing of wildlife, in an untargeted way. In the most recent year in which data was collected in 2024, Wildlife Services killed more than 150,000 wild animals in Oregon using methods including neck and leg snares, steel-jawed leghold traps, shooting animals from helicopters and planes, and gassing coyote and fox dens.
Don’t let our legislators approve giving Wildlife Services more funding and therefore more power to carry out more inhumane and unnecessary wildlife killings. Killing animals like black bears, foxes, mountain lions, beavers, and coyotes is not an effective way to reduce human-wildlife conflict, and may even make the problem worse by disrupting wildlife’s natural social structures.
If you care about animals and Oregon’s precious wildlife, please take action to stop this dangerous bill before it’s too late.
