On Tuesday, we had the honor of hosting Mr. Bill Ferguson, the pilot farmer of our Farm Transitions program. He joined us to share his experience as a chicken farmer and discuss his decision to partner with Animal Outlook to end his poultry business and convert his farm into a lettuce growing operation.
Over one hundred people registered for the Town Hall and asked insightful questions and shared unique perspectives on the future of farming. If you missed it, you can now catch it now on Animal Outlook’s YouTube channel.
More than one participant wanted to know more about Mr. Ferguson’s day to day experience as a chicken farmer and why he chose to transition. According to Mr. Ferguson, “Growing chickens is very stressful. You walk in every morning and the first thing you do is pick up dead chickens. It’s what you do to make a living. I’m yet to pick up a dead head of lettuce. The stress is starting to come down. I sleep well at night.”

Thanks to the hard work of Animal Outlook’s Farm Transitions team, nearly 500,000 chickens per year have been removed from the food system. As the work expands and we transition more farms, your support is more important than ever. If you want to learn more about how Animal Outlook is reimagining farms, you can visit us at www.animaloutlook.org/farm-transitions.
This work is only possible through the dedication of supporters like you. If you want to remove even more animals from the food system, you can make a gift to support our Farm Transitions program.
Please help us transition more farmers like Mr. Ferguson by making your gift today. Each farmer we work with will result in thousands of animals spared from a life in the animal agriculture system. In the words of Mr. Ferguson, “The chicken industry was cruel and inhumane. I believe that animals deserve kind treatment. I think we’re closer to thinking alike than you would realize.”
With gratitude,
Angela de Freitas
