** Race + Power Weekly
------------------------------------------------------------

Recently, we have been inundated with the news about critical programs losing the funding and resources they need to survive. This has already had a massive impact on nonprofits and civil society, causing layoffs and the end of critical programs like AmeriCorps and community violence interruption initiatives. But now is not the time to give up; it is the time to act, whether by calling on members of Congress or advocating for philanthropy to do more.

In today’s newsletter, we look at how racial justice leaders are navigating this shifting political landscape where resources are under attack.

First, we look at my piece about how the loss of DOJ funding ([link removed]) has caused uncertainty and instability for community violence interruption programs. Next, Hillary Kane wrote ([link removed]) earlier this month about the critical need to save AmeriCorps and what’s at stake as the agency’s funding has been decimated. Then, Hiram Williams Figueroa reports back from the Racial Equity Builders Dialogue ([link removed]) in Puerto Rico—an annual convening of racial justice leaders across the Americas. Finally, we invite you to register for our “Ask the Nonprofit Lawyer” webinar ([link removed]) with Jeffrey Tenenbaum on May 27. This is your opportunity to get legal insights
in plain language about key red flags; and practical tools to mitigate legal risk and protect your nonprofit organization, team, and impact. Early bird registration ends May 23.

Thanks for reading,
