Disaster Preparedness Event Helps Texans with Disabilities Prepare for Hurricane Season

As we enter the Atlantic hurricane season, we are reminded to enhance our disaster preparedness efforts with whole community planning. The city of Houston is pleased to announce the hosting of a clinic and expo aimed at empowering the public to better prepare for a variety of potential threats and hazards that may affect Texans. Regardless of whether a disaster arises from a storm, flood, fire, or other events, being adequately prepared is essential for accessing and utilizing the resources available to those in need.

This award-winning event won recognition from the Governor’s Committee on People with Disabilities with a 2024 Martha Arbuckle award for helping people with disabilities create individual preparedness plans while being supported by emergency management experts. The GCPD encourages other communities to adopt this model of whole community planning.

The clinic will offer participants the opportunity to create a personal disaster preparedness plan tailored to their specific needs and considerations. Upon arrival, attendees will receive a comprehensive workbook and will be paired with a knowledgeable navigator who will guide them through various preparedness topics. Participants will have the chance to engage with local organizations, gather valuable information, and complete their workbook, which will provide them with a personalized preparedness strategy to take home. Participation in the clinic is optional.

The expo portion will feature a wide array of family-friendly activities, including panel discussions, expert presentations, demonstrations, children's activities, exhibitors, and displays of emergency vehicles.

This complimentary event is scheduled to take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on May 17 in Hall A of the George R. Brown Convention Center, located at 1001 Avenida De Las Americas in Houston. The venue is accessible, and an ASL interpreter will be available to assist attendees.
