The American Association of Nurse Anesthetists has honored Wallena Gould, EdD, CRNA, FAAN, who founded the Diversity in Nurse Anesthesia Mentorship Program, with its Agatha Hodgins Award for Outstanding Accomplishment. The award recognizes individuals whose dedication has furthered the art and science of nurse anesthesia. Congratulations for the well-deserved honor!
Nurse Earns Philadelphia Inquirer Influencer Award
The Philadelphia Inquirer has recognized Tarik S. Khan, MSN, RN, FNP-BC, as a 2019 Influencer of Healthcare, for excellence in volunteerism.
Khan helped found two nonprofits, and we are proud to say that he assists the Center to Champion Nursing in America, an initiative of AARP Foundation, AARP, and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, in its efforts to increase the public’s access to care.
Seattle was the setting for a National Academy of Medicine session on two topics, technology in health and self-care for nurses. The exchange of ideas led to one common conclusion: the need for culture change. This was the third of three town hall meetings as the NAM prepares its nursing 2020-2030 report.

Heather M. Young, PhD, RN, FAAN, found in nursing a profession that could include “my love of so many perspectives on health and being human.” Young, part of the Campaign’s Strategic Advisory Committee, was inspired when she was young by the leadership she saw in two nurses—including her mother, and “the beautiful cape she wore!”
The latest Nursing Economic$ features pieces on nursing leadership—and three of the six authors have helped lead Campaign Action Coalitions. Nora Warshawsky, PhD, RN, FAAN, previously of the Kentucky Action Coalition, and Lisa Sundean, PhD, MHA, RN, a Campaign
adviser, helped write one. Kimberly Harper, MS, RN, FAAN, of the Indiana Action Coalition, wrote the other, with Laurie Benson, BSN, of the Nurses on Boards Coalition.
The Suncoast Nursing Action Coalition, part of the Florida Action Coalition, has just awarded 14 scholarships, totaling $50,000, to local nurses. Its annual award is part of its plan to develop a pipeline of baccalaureate-prepared nurses to ensure continued high-quality care in the region. Read more

Jefferson, Rush Nursing Schools to Join Population Health Call
Since fall 2016, educators and nurses have joined a Campaign for Action teleconference held every other month to discuss ways to add population health to nursing curricula. The August 28 call will feature representatives from two schools of nursing the Campaign profiled in the March 2019 report

The American Academy of Nursing and Jonas Center for Nursing and Veterans Healthcare are updating the Jonas Policy Scholars Program. The two-year fellowship program will “more explicitly focus on the policy process” and include a new mentoring program with AAN policy leaders. Application deadline: August 30.

Sigma Foundation, Jonas Philanthropies Launch Research Grant
A new fund, the Sigma Foundation for Nursing/Jonas Philanthropies collaborative research grant, is designed to support nursing research that will help improve health care for the most vulnerable citizens of the U.S. Grants are available in three categories: mental health, rural health, and veterans health care. Journal Seeks Abstracts for Future of Nursing Issue
Nursing Education Perspectives will devote its fall 2020 issue to The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health report, 10 years after its publication. Action Coalitions and others are encouraged to submit manuscripts about nursing education research studies relevant to the report by January 1, 2020.
