Call your member of Congress: protect organizations that serve us all!
|
Dear Friend,
No matter what we look like or where we live, most of us value the people and organizations that serve our communities. From making sure our voices are heard, the water we drink is safe, and people have enough food to feed their families, organizations around the country do all sorts of work that make our lives better.
Call your member of Congress to protect the organizations that serve our communities.
You’re probably following the news of the mega budget bill that’s moving through Congress’s various committees right now. Make no mistake: This is part of the corporate-driven takeover of the federal government. The White House wants to spend $1 trillion on defense, while making huge cuts to education, healthcare, protection of the environment, and much more.
This morning, the Ways and Means subcommittee voted to include language that tries to silence the voices of those whose views may not align with the current regime. The provision would give the secretary of the Treasury the power to target any entity as a “terrorist-supporting organization” -- no matter what it actually does -- and potentially strip them of their tax-exempt status. It widens the avenues for this regime to go after its political enemies. It also has the potential to harm organizations that protect our rights and serve our communities -- from soup kitchens to youth basketball teams.
Last year, members of Congress tried to get legislation like this passed -- twice! -- but people like you rose up to defeat it from becoming law.

Tell Congress: Reject the "nonprofit killer" language in the budget bill
|
|
The current regime, run by and for billionaires, is trying to privatize the government for profit and silence dissent. This bill -- with the various proposals and additions being considered -- is part of how they’re trying to do it. They’re taking the money that we have paid into the government and diverting it away from the vital, life-giving, and enriching services that the federal government provides -- all to make the rich richer and more powerful, at the expense of the rest of us.
And while they’re at it, they’re sneaking in language that has the potential to crush organizations that serve our communities, protect our voices, and save lives.
But they’ve got another thing coming. When they come for one of us, they come for all. We see through their efforts to divide us, and we are acting together to protect our freedoms, our families, and our futures. People across the country are turning out on the streets, in the halls of Congress, and on the phones to protest the harms that this bill would inflict on our communities.
So if you believe in the freedom to fight for what matters, now is the time to act. If you care about building a future where people and the planet thrive, now is the time to get loud. And if you want to ensure those of us taking on the corporate power behind this regime can keep fighting, now is the time to get on the phone and call your member of Congress.
