Dear Friend,
In the newsletter this week...
* Is Reform UK now the government’s ‘main opposition’?
* Net migration is already projected to fall, before the government’s announcement
* ‘Home Office letter’ requisitioning former social club for migrants is fake
* Government tracker
But first...
Following the horrific attacks in Southport last summer, it was revealed that accounts on social media with relatively few followers had posted the wrong information about the identity of the attacker.
This triggered a cascade of misinformation which helped fuel days of riots, disorder and protests where people were injured, property was damaged, and lives were ruined.
The information shared by these accounts was wrong, and people were hurt.
In our first annual report since the riots following the Southport attacks, lessons have not been learned, and we’re raising the alarm. ([link removed])
AI-generated content is right now being beamed to every smartphone and laptop in the world, creating a reality where everything, including facts, is up for debate.
With a change in leadership in Washington, this murky online world is the perfect environment for powerful people to ignore uncomfortable information by implying that facts are just another opinion.
** Access to accurate information isn't a luxury. It is the foundation of democracy.

A world where nothing is true might protect a few powerful people, but it can and does cause harm to everyone else.
From the community that turns in on itself because of hoax posts in their local Facebook group, to the young person caught out by a dodgy online offer, to the vulnerable person given false information about cancer treatment.
This is the reality we're working hard every day to challenge.
I am optimistic that with your support, we can make real progress against misinformation.
Best wishes,
Chris Morris, CEO

This week, the government set out a number of measures intended to further control legal migration, saying net migration “must come down”.
But existing projections suggest this was already likely to happen.

A letter circulating on social media which appears to be from the Home Office informing two local councils in Gloucestershire that a former social club is to be requisitioned to become a leisure centre exclusively for migrants isn’t real.
Both councils, which are listed as recipients, have confirmed they have not received it. And the MP for Gloucester has issued a statement saying it is a “complete fabrication”.
