I fear voters in other states will meet a similar fate to mine unless we act now to expand access to vote-by-mail, early voting, and online voter registration.

John,

Nearly two months to the day after voters in Wisconsin waited in long lines to vote during a deadly pandemic, Georgia voters met the same undemocratic circumstances at the ballot box on Tuesday.

I should know — I was one of them.

I stood in line for three hours to vote, only to make it to a scanner that wasn’t working. We placed my ballot in the scanner seven times and flipped it three times before it was finally accepted.

The story was the same at polling locations across the state, particularly in Black communities: Broken machines that led to long lines and not enough poll workers to respond to the demand. Many voters had to show up in-person because the mail-in ballots they requested never arrived.

We must be very clear about this: Our Secretary of State intentionally mismanaged the election and used the weight of public office to suppress votes. I fear voters in other states will meet a similar fate unless we act now to expand access to vote-by-mail, early voting, and online voter registration.

Will you call on your members of Congress today to support the Natural Disaster and Emergency Ballot Act? No one should have to choose between their health and making their voice heard.

Voter suppression in Black and Brown communities is nothing new. But in 2020, refusing to make voting easier during a deadly pandemic is a golden opportunity for Republicans to hold on to power wherever they can.

COVID-19 isn’t going away anytime soon, especially in Georgia, where our elected officials have prioritized the economy over public health at every turn. And if we want every state in this country to have the resources they need to run a successful election by mail, Congress must take swift action now to prepare for November.

Call on your members of Congress to support the Natural Disaster and Emergency Ballot Act today. The louder we get, the more likely we are to be successful in demanding this change.

The fight for protecting our right to vote is far from over. But ensuring that everyone who can vote in November, can do so safely, is an essential first step toward justice.
