Our democracy is under attack from the far right. At the core of this assault? Project 2025, the playbook for MAGA extremism.

As we suspected, just four months into Donald Trump’s presidency, he’s working to bring Project 2025 to fruition — meaning that the freedom to vote is at risk, along with our democracy. 

Take a look at these actions and how they connect to Project 2025: 

→ Buried in Trump’s order to pause federal funds earlier this year was a deliberate attack on election security. The freeze targeted $55 million in Election Security Grants — grants administered by the U.S. Election Assistance Commission that are essential for upholding election security and modernizing voter infrastructure. 

→ Project 2025 has a goal of undermining trust in the electoral process and weakening our elections’ cybersecurity protections. The plan even states that the president could withhold funds to consolidate power and overcome the bureaucracy — ultimately to advance the MAGA agenda.

→ With cabinet picks like Pam Bondi for U.S. Attorney General and Harmeet Dhillon to lead the Department of Justice’s Civil Rights division, Trump has given authority to two of his cronies that aided attempts to overturn the 2020 election. Less independence at the Justice Department can mean fewer checks on the MAGA agenda of election interference and voter suppression. 

→ Project 2025’s proposal to dismantle the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division would severely weaken enforcement of the Voting Rights Act, threatening access to the ballot for Black and brown communities and undermining decades of voting protections. 

→ One of Trump’s recent executive orders — a blatant, illegal attempt to seize control over elections — calls for prosecuting state and local election officials if they don’t go along with his anti-voter agenda and his power grab. 

→ Project 2025 lays out how to prosecute state and local elections officials by twisting a law originally used against the KKK’s violent voter suppression. Under this playbook, the Trump regime can enforce its own vision for how to run elections.

Clearly, the far-right is targeting elections because they’re scared of democratic accountability.
