Hi John,
I’m sure you’ve heard that the federal government is opening up our public lands and national forests for logging, putting profit over our forests, wildlife, and communities (see the EOs here [[link removed]] and here [[link removed]]). Now there’s a bill moving through the Oregon legislature, HB 3103-5 [[link removed]], that would increase logging on our public lands, disregarding the Oregon Department of Forestry’s (ODF) current forest values of recreation, clean water, wildlife habitat and climate resiliency. That’s why HB 3103-5 has been labeled as a Major Threat by the Oregon Conservation Network (OCN). Will you take action now to stop this bill [[link removed]]?
Take action: [link removed]
If this Major Threat passes, our state forests will be logged at unsustainable levels, the balance between industry and our state values is compromised, and it will be much more common for the ODF to be sued (read more [[link removed]]). HB 3103-5 would also be a very expensive bill, costing about a million dollars in funding to start the program, in addition to costing the state thousands with increased lawsuits against the ODF.
Regardless of all these reasons why HB 3103-5 is a terrible bill and a Major Threat to a Healthy Oregon, at the end of the day it’s an unnecessary bill. Sustainable harvest levels are already set by the State Forester with the help of the Board of Forestry.
With all the attacks we are seeing on our public lands from the federal government, now is not the time for Oregon to take a step back on our values, and open our forests up.
Our forests and public lands are what makes Oregon, well, Oregon. We can’t afford to lose them in this dangerous time. Tell our lawmakers to stop this bill that would open up our forests for even more logging now[[link removed]]!
Take action: [link removed]
Sincerely,
Eliza Walton (she/they)
