This is my first official MP report since being sworn in as a member of Canada's 45th Parliament earlier this week.
Also this week, Prime Minister Carney announced his updated cabinet, which surprised many.
In March, shortly after becoming Prime Minister, Mr. Carney announced his first cabinet—a notably small group of just 23 ministers by modern standards. At the time, PM Carney was said to be "putting his own stamp on the Liberal brand."
The smaller cabinet appears to have been created primarily for pre-election purposes, as PM Carney's newly announced cabinet is significantly larger—comprising 29 ministers (including the Prime Minister) and 10 "Secretary of State" positions, which are essentially junior ministers.
I am pleased to share some good news. Local Kelowna Liberal MP Stephen Fuhr has been appointed Secretary of State for Defence Procurement. In my opinion, having more British Columbia MPs, particularly from the Interior around any decision making table in Ottawa is a good thing. Given his background and experience, this role suits him well, and I wish him success in this new position.
As the Official Opposition, we were concerned to see that 14 of PM Carney's 39 ministers and junior ministers were former front-bench ministers from Prime Minister Trudeau's cabinet.
For those voters who wanted change, this cabinet selection does not reflect that signal.
What's next? The Honourable Pierre Poilievre, Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada, and his leadership team will announce his shadow cabinet before Monday, May 26, when the House of Commons opens with the Throne Speech to be read by His Majesty King Charles III.
Another concerning development is that the Carney Government has indicated it won't table a budget during Parliament's opening session.
Instead, the Liberals have indicated they will not provide any fiscal information to Canadians until this fall, when a “fiscal update” will be announced.
This situation is problematic, as the Liberals will undoubtedly introduce legislation with fiscal implications. Without a complete and transparent budget, Canadians won't be able to understand the full financial impact of these decisions.
This brings me to my question for this week: Do you agree with the Liberals' decision to delay providing this necessary budgetary information until the fall fiscal update rather than releasing it this spring?
