The results of our hurricane survey are in, John, and the
winner is…
ExxonMobil.
A whopping 61% of respondents said the first hurricane of 2025 should be
named after this Big Oil giant, and for good reason. Exxon has made
billions off fueling the climate crisis, while communities are left with
the wreckage of homes and lives lost to more frequent and more ferocious
hurricanes.

Exxon has been dodging responsibility for decades. Not only have they
emitted 40 billion metric tons of greenhouse gases since 1965, but they
also cast doubt and hid the truth about fossil fuels’ impact on our
climate for more than 30 years.^1,2
By the mid-2000s, their strategy changed to acknowledging human-induced
climate change — but blamed individual consumers for their personal energy
use, deflecting attention away from Exxon’s much bigger role in fueling
this crisis.^3
They profit, they greenwash, they put the responsibility on everyday
people, all while continuing to pump more oil out of the ground when we
know the dangers.
All of this got us where we are today. More frequent, ferocious hurricanes
are destroying homes, entire communities, and livelihoods — with Black,
Brown and Native communities being hardest hit of all.
Last year alone, climate disasters cost Americans $182.7 billion in
damages.^4 Why is it that we the people are left to pay for a problem
created by this massive corporation?
ExxonMobil has been leaving us the tab for its dirty mess for decades.
They should pay for the damage they’ve already caused and the damage of
what’s to come.
