Dear NRDC Activist,
The iconic bald eagle … the American
alligator … peregrine falcon … these are all animals that were on
the brink of extinction until they were saved by protections
under the Endangered Species Act (ESA).
That lifesaving law is now facing a slew
of threats from the Trump administration and its
anti-environmental allies in Congress — and their latest attack
attempts to green-light logging, drilling, and other industrial
activities in the places imperiled species call home.
The administration is accepting public
comments on this proposal, but only until May 19 — so we need as
many people as possible to make their voices heard right away.
Submit your comment NOW opposing the
administration’s dangerous attempts to sell off our nation’s most
critical wildlife habitats and drive endangered species further
toward extinction. ( [link removed] )
The proposal would weaken ESA protections
by repealing the definition of “harm” to species. The change
signals that the administration wants to allow more logging and
oil drilling that destroys habitat species rely on to survive.
This destruction of habitat is the main cause of species
extinction worldwide.
Every animal and plant is part of a
larger, interconnected ecosystem, where every species is crucial.
The ESA helps keep all life on earth in balance, protecting
manatees, grizzly bears, Florida panthers, and over 1,300 more
species that are listed as endangered or threatened. And the ESA
is effective: the law has prevented the extinction of an
estimated 291 species like our national bird, the bald eagle.
The administration is already
prioritizing extraction of natural resources on public lands,
considering eliminating some of our iconic national monuments,
and gutting staff at national parks — all for fossil fuel profits
under the guise of solving a “National Energy Emergency.” But the
U.S. is not in an energy emergency — we’re the world’s leading
producer of oil and gas. This new proposal is yet another attack
on our most sensitive public lands where imperiled species live.

won’t stay silent while they take a wrecking ball to vital

NRDC is fighting back against this dire
threat to wildlife at risk — including preparing to go to court
if necessary — but in the meantime, we need your help to mobilize
an overwhelming public outcry in defense of endangered species.
Together we’ve fought back against
attacks on imperiled wildlife before like successfully going to
court to fight for the home of the rusty patched bumblebee. And
earlier this year, NRDC supporters submitted over 25,000 messages
to the administration to support protecting monarch butterflies
and their habitat.
