# [#]Friend,

I just got back from Mexico, where I was visiting an 11-year-old girl and her family who were deported to Mexico while traveling to Houston for treatment of her brain tumor.

The family, whose names are not being released, were detained in February and scheduled for deportation—and were told they would have to take their children with them if they wanted to stay together.

The girl, who is a U.S. citizen, had a rare type of brain tumor removed by surgeons at Texas Children’s Hospital last year. And since her deportation, her condition has already started to worsen – with problems walking, and concerns from her doctor that she could face vision loss.

The family is struggling to get her the medical treatment she requires in Mexico – and are petitioning the Trump administration for a humanitarian exemption to return to the United States. Along with a couple of my House colleagues, I’m working to raise awareness about her case and her petition to return to the U.S.

As someone who has fought cancer and benefited from groundbreaking medical research and treatment in the U.S., I can’t imagine the anguish her family feels as they fight for her care in Mexico.

When I met with the girl, she was wearing a STAAR test T-shirt that are given to Texas children during standardized testing. My children take that test.

Her story speaks to the growing inhumanity and cruelty we’ve seen from this administration – which is inconsistent with American values. Regardless of what you think of immigration policy, no one wants to see a sick girl’s medication taken away.

I won’t stop fighting for her – and for the countless other families whose basic humanity and dignity have been under assault by this administration. We can’t turn away.

Thank you,

-Joaquin
