It has been 60 days since Kilmar Abrego Garcia hugged his children.
60 days since he has seen his wife, or slept in his own bed, or felt safe.
That’s because two months ago, the Trump administration wrongly deported him to a prison in El Salvador. Despite numerous court orders to get Kilmar home—including a unanimous Supreme Court decision—Trump and his West Wing lackeys refuse to comply.
Our government doesn’t get to grab people off the street, skip the courtroom, and exile them. Donald Trump is not a king. That’s not how our justice system works. It’s not who we are.
Kilmar’s case is one of the clearest examples of Trump’s assault on the rule of law and the basic rights of people in this country—but it’s not the only one. This is one piece of a larger puzzle that shows how Trump is trying to crown himself the unimpeachable supreme ruler of America by dismantling the checks and balances that have defined our democracy for over two centuries.
But in this piece of the puzzle, Kilmar’s three U.S. citizen children—two of whom have special needs—have been stripped of their father thanks to Trump’s lawlessness.
