The 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence gives Americans the opportunity to embrace the call of the Founders to promote and engage an educated citizenry. As the birthplace of Washington, Jefferson, and Madison, Virginia holds a special place in the history of the American Revolution. But how much do we really know about Virginia’s political culture in the weeks leading up to the immortal day of July 4, 1776?
Join us Thursday, May 15 at 3:00 pm ET for a conversation with the President and CEO of George Washington’s Mount Vernon,
Douglas Bradburn ([link removed]) , about Virginia’s integral role in the independence movement during the spring of 1776. JMC’s own resident historian and manager of network engagement, Elliott Drago ([link removed]) , will moderate.
We’ll ask: What were the political contexts within Virginia that animated contemporary views of independence? What role did George Washington and other Virginia Founders play at this crucial moment? What are the best firsthand accounts we can read to better understand our forebears and the high stakes of independence?
We hope to gain greater insight into Virginia’s place in the Revolutionary narrative, and how the role of Virginians helps us deepen our appreciation for the Declaration of Independence that grew from the soils of the Old Dominion.
Register here for this exciting exploration of Virginia's place in the Revolution! ([link removed])
