“The fact that this scheme got as far as it did is a red, flashing warning that our elections remain vulnerable to judicial sabotage in politicized courts.”
— Slate
“I hope we return to a time when those who lose elections concede defeat rather than trying to tear down the entire election system and erode voter confidence.”
— Karen Brinson Bell, former North Carolina State Elections Executive Director
Hi team,
In November, North Carolinians re-elected Justice Allison Riggs to the state supreme court. Now, more than six months later, her opponent has finally conceded after pulling lever after lever to try to overturn a free and fair election.
This was a hard-fought victory. As a North Carolinian, I was proud to mobilize with All On The Line and supporters like you to fight to uphold the will of the people.
The hard truth is, anti-democracy extremists have shown us that they are willing to do whatever it takes to win, even if it means effectively ending free and fair elections. This challenge — which threatened the legitimacy of over 65,000 legally cast ballots — should have never been allowed to move forward in the first place.
What happened in North Carolina serves as an example, demonstrating how partisan extremists are using the courts to threaten the very foundations of our democracy. Let me be clear: Extremists failed in North Carolina. But we can count on them to replicate this playbook to try to steal elections nationwide:
“Regardless of the outcome, the unusual series of challenges from Judge Griffin, and the courts’ openness to entertaining them, may have paved the way for similar challenges in future close elections.”
— New York Times
So as we celebrate this hard-earned win, it’s important to remember that the fight for equal participation is far from over. All On The Line is committed to working for a truly representative democracy where every eligible voter can make their voice heard.
