Right now, Republicans in Congress are racing to pass a brutal budget that would gut Medicaid and health care benefits and slash funding for food assistance and essential services working families rely on, just to give massive tax cuts to billionaires and corporations. And just this morning the Ways & Means committee in the House moved forward the tax portion of this budget, and now Republicans will be moving quickly to get the provisions through the GOP’s majority.
It’s the same playbook we’ve seen from Trump and his Republican allies in Congress during the passage of the 2017 tax package: grow their power, dismantle our democracy and support systems, and leave regular people behind.
But, we can still stop a bulk of these cuts from happening with public pressure. RSVP for a movement call TOMORROW on Thursday, May 15 with Working Families Party and Indivisible.
Republicans are trying to pull off a quick vote passage in the House, but Republicans still hold only a slim majority. If we can get just four Republican holdouts on this vote, it could tank the entire proposal. And the cracks in their coalition are starting to show.
Republicans in Harris-won districts are doing their best to posture that they’re against Medicaid cuts, but based on the budget resolution they already agreed on months ago, they have to make substantial cuts from Medicaid, SNAP and elsewhere to meet their own goals to "cut the deficit."
Speaker Mike Johnson is trying to rush the bill through before Memorial Day on May 26, but we’ve already seen amendments to certain parts of the budget delayed under pressure.

Republicans are counting on people not to pay attention to what’s happening. But we are paying attention. And we’re not letting up, because we know that working families foot the bill when Republicans are in charge if these budgets become law.
