Fellow activist, Pennsylvania is the next major battleground state as the state Supreme Court retention elections are starting to heat up.
As a reminder, three PA Supreme Court justices (elected as Democrats) are seeking to retain their seats. If MAGA is successful with their anti-retention campaign, the Court could have three vacancies until the Governor is able to appoint and confirm their replacements (unlikely as this would require support from Republicans in the PA Senate) or until the next judicial election in 2027. The GOP party chair and state senator, Greg Rothman, has said, the judicial races on the ballot are the top priority for the Republican party.
This goes beyond 2025: As The Philadelphia Inquirer reported, GOP activist Scott Presler’s organization put in campaign literature, “We could create a Republican majority (5R-2D) in the Pennsylvania Supreme Court before the next presidential election in 2028.”

As our CEO, Kadida Kenner, stated to WHYY News, having a MAGA Majority on the court would lead to voter suppression. Republicans are trying to make the decisions coming out of our courts more political – from reproductive rights to the political and racial gerrymandering of congressional districts. The stakes have never been higher.
Democracy defending justices on the PA Supreme Court have drastically impacted the lives of Pennsylvanians – protecting our voting rights by eliminating gerrymandered Congressional maps and ensuring equitably funded public schools.
