Friend,

On Wednesday morning, the House Ways and Means Committee advanced budget reconciliation legislation that included this nonprofit killer provision — and now the full House could vote on it with very little warning. Enacting this legislation could be catastrophic for Free Press Action and every nonprofit in the country.

Friend,

In November, right after Trump’s reelection, many of you helped us defeat H.R. 9495, dubbed the nonprofit-killer bill. Supporters in Congress backed this bill under the guise of keeping Americans safe from terrorism, but — like so many executive “counterterrorism” powers — it would have actually granted new powers to this dangerous authoritarian.

This evening, members of the House Ways and Means Committee are voting to advance a budget-reconciliation package that resurrects most of H.R. 9495. This legislation would empower the Trump administration to target and investigate any nonprofit as a “terrorist supporting organization.” To make matters worse, it would also allow the administration to terminate a nonprofit’s tax-exempt status — threatening its very survival.

Every member of Congress must oppose handing such sweeping powers to an increasingly destructive president. Please call your representative right away: 202-688-0628.

It’s hard to think of a more dangerous combination than the most vindictive White House in memory and a bill lacking meaningful protections against abuse: We’re on the brink of unchecked weaponization of our federal government against anyone who dares exercise their First Amendment freedoms.

The passage of this budgetary amendment would have a severe chilling effect on nonprofits like Free Press Action — including struggling nonprofit newsrooms around the country — as we work to hold this runaway authoritarian regime accountable.
