Three years ago today, a gunman went on a racist rampage at a grocery store in Buffalo, NY, killing 10 people. Around 2:30 p.m., a gunman entered a Buffalo supermarket, armed with an AR-15-style assault weapon. 

By 2:36 p.m., he shot 13 people, killing 10 of them.

In the span of just 6 minutes, an entire community was torn apart. Survivors were left traumatized by memories of screams and gunshots, of hiding in milk freezers and backrooms. Families were left struggling to make sense of the senseless, unnecessary violence that ripped away their loved ones in an instant.

Assault weapons were designed for war zones, not grocery stores. This hateful attack in Buffalo was made deadlier because of the weapon used. Assault weapons don't belong in our communities – but our lawmakers have failed to pass a ban even though it is proven to save lives.

Right now, Congress has the power to pass the Assault Weapons Ban of 2025. Gun lobby-backed lawmakers will try to stop this critical bill – but we owe it to the victims and survivors in Buffalo to keep fighting until these weapons of war are finally off the street, out of our communities.

It's time to stop offering platitudes and stop pretending that there is any other path forward: The only way to protect our communities is by banning assault weapons and it has to happen now.
