There’s still time to add your voice to a growing chorus of people speaking out against the Department of Interior’s proposal to gut the Endangered Species Act (ESA). Federal officials have proposed altering the ESA’s long-understood definition of the word “harm” to no longer include habitat destruction. This change would threaten already imperiled wildlife and strike a blow at the very heart of redwood conservation.
The proposed rule is subject to a public comment period through May 19, 2025. More than 120,000 people from all corners of the United States—using our suggested message or adding their own words—have already sent heartfelt comments to the Department of the Interior expressing their opposition to the suggested change. Here are just a few:
“Habitat loss is a leading cause of species extinction, and protecting habitat is vital to preserving biodiversity, safeguarding clean air and water, and maintaining resilient landscapes—including irreplaceable ecosystems like California’s ancient redwood forests.”
“Destroying habitats now will cost us far more later in disaster recovery, agricultural losses, and public health impacts. We can’t afford to treat nature as expendable.”
“What good is protecting an animal if we allow the destruction of the very place it needs to exist?”
