Mercy Corps is committed to helping families survive catastrophes, thrive after crises, and rebuild for a better tomorrow. To create lasting change, we start locally.

84% of our team members are from the communities they serve, meaning they know exactly where the needs are most dire and how best to deliver relief and support.

Today, we’re highlighting one of our team members doing incredible work in Kenya.

Meet Duncan, a Financial Inclusion and Market Systems Officer for Mercy Corps, supporting communities in the face of adversity and creating incredible impact.
Kenya has been grappling with various challenges, including economic inequality, food insecurity, and prolonged droughts. These challenges have compounded into a humanitarian crisis, making day-to-day life difficult for Kenyans.

Duncan oversees multiple Mercy Corps projects that address some of the challenges the people of Kenya are facing:

(Left) Selina* harvests spinach in a communal garden after learning how to cultivate climate-resilient crops through Mercy Corps programs. (Right) The women involved in the village’s savings and loan associations are now able to cover school fees and other expenses.

To address food insecurity, we are helping women receive training on climate-resilient farming, nutrition, basic literacy, water and sanitation. They are now able to grow fresh vegetables and cook healthy meals for their families.

One way we’re addressing economic instability is by helping a group of women operate a village Savings and Loan Association in order to save and build up an emergency fund.

To reduce the spread of diseases, we’ve built 30+ new lavatories as part of the WASH program to provide the community with greater privacy and access to better hygiene systems.
The work we’re able to do in Kenya wouldn’t be possible without your commitment. Mercy Corps team members like Duncan are able to effectively coordinate resources to meet the needs of families when people like you invest in our mission.

As crises continue to expand and foreign aid funding is being cut, we look forward to sharing more about the people who are tirelessly carrying out our mission and helping communities survive and thrive. In the meantime, learn more about our impact in Kenya.

Sincerely,

The Mercy Corps Team
