On the day he took an oath to uphold the U.S. Constitution, Donald Trump began efforts to rewrite it, issuing an executive order purporting to end the constitutional guarantee of birthright citizenship.

From the very beginning of his first presidential campaign to his second time in office, Trump has zeroed in on the issue of immigration, not just testing the bounds of power, but consolidating it. Indeed, the path to authoritarianism is being built on the backs of immigrants.

At the National Immigration Law Center, we’ve seen firsthand how immigrants are being used to test the boundaries of authoritarian power.

Trump is laying the groundwork to dismantle everyone's rights. If we continue to normalize disappearances, censorship, and detention without trial, applying these tactics to political opponents who are citizens will require little extension.

Our work at NILC has never been more urgent. We’re defending the rights of immigrants in court, exposing unconstitutional abuses of power, and sounding the alarm about what’s at stake.
