The PFAS foam spill in Brunswick last August was an environmental disaster, jeopardizing the health of Maine's people and the environment. It was the largest toxic foam spill in Maine history and the sixth largest nationwide. Without action from lawmakers, it could happen again.
Recognizing the dire impacts of toxic chemicals in our environment, Maine has acted to phase out PFAS, including banning the use of firefighting foam that contains PFAS. Yet, large quantities of toxic, PFAS-laden firefighting foam are still being stored at sites in Maine and around the country. LD 222 will support communities with the funds and resources they need to safely collect and remove this toxic firefighting foam, protecting Maine people and the environment.
