Dear John,
I just finished an all-night committee hearing in Washington. We just advanced a bill that will cut taxes for American families. Let me tell you about it.
Preventing the Largest Tax Hike in American History
Right now, Americans are facing the largest tax hike in our nation’s history when provisions of the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) expire at the end of this year. In real terms, that means the average Ohioan in our district could see their annual tax bill increase by over $1,500 next year.
What Did We Do?
A tax increase would be catastrophic for families across Ohio and America. Fortunately, we passed our tax bill out of the House Ways and Means Committee, marking the next step to deliver tax relief to middle class workers, families, farmers, seniors, and small business owners in our communities. After a long night of debate and discussions, we took a final vote and advanced our tax bill this morning.
So, What’s Next?
Soon, all the other committees in the House of Representatives will finish passing similar bills dealing with different issues like unleashing American energy and securing our border. Once that happens, we will combine all these policies into one bill for final passage on the House floor.
Once we pass it in the House, the bill will go to the Senate for consideration. Once we agree on all the provisions and it clears the Senate, it will go to the president for his final signature.
Why Now?
After the TCJA passed, America saw record economic and wage growth that helped American families get ahead. If the provisions in that bill expire at the end of this year, it’s going to result in a massive tax increase on the middle class. Our efforts today helped prevent that tax increase.
Recently, I joined 10TV to talk about the need to preserve these tax cuts, click here to watch my interview.
And if you want some hard facts, here are some reasons why we as Republicans in Congress want to extend your tax cuts:
The bottom line is this: Ohio families do not need a tax hike.
As this process continues, I will keep you updated on how we are continuing to ensure we extend the existing tax cuts and enact new ones that will help working Ohioans and their families live the American Dream.
