john,
When Congress allocates funding—for medical research, for our schools, for our Veterans—it isn’t a suggestion.
It’s the law.
And yet time and time again, we’ve seen President Trump and his allies treat those commitments like optional guidelines.
Here in Washington State, vital research dollars have been stalled and withheld—funds that support life-saving work at our hospitals, universities, and research centers like Fred Hutchinson. As a doctor, I know this is the work that leads to new treatments, new cures, and new hope for families.
But it goes deeper. When these research institutions lose funding, so do their biotechnology graduate students—leaving no path for a new generation of scientific investigators. It cuts off American leadership in cutting edge science.
Here’s one example: Diabetes researchers are looking for ways to prevent diabetes. As someone with T1D, I am excited that there may be ways to prevent or delay T1D for future generations. They are also investigating connections between all types of diabetes and dementia, like Alzheimer’s. Just imagine having research that could help prevent Alzheimer’s!
These cuts are outrageous and stupid, and cede American leadership in biotechnology. And that’s exactly why Democrats have been sounding the alarm.
Let me be clear: The Constitution matters. Checks and balances are there for a reason, and right now, our president needs a serious check on his actions. But the only way to do that and to restore normalcy to Congress is with a Democratic House who will stand up, fight back, and say NO to Trump's reckless and extreme agenda that will raise healthcare prices for all Americans, cost real people their lives, and abandon our nation’s scientific leadership.
That’s why I’m fighting every day to keep WA-08 blue—and it’s why this mid-month fundraising deadline matters so much. Will you chip in today to help us hit our goal and prepare for the road ahead? >>
