Dear SPUC supporter,
I am writing to you with the disappointing news that Liam McArthur’s Assisted Dying for Terminally Ill Adults (Scotland) Bill has passed Stage One, with MSPs voting 70 to 56 in favour.

At SPUC, we are deeply concerned by this decision and will continue to campaign against legislation which could make assisted suicide a legal reality in Scotland. It is difficult to believe that MSPs could support what will effectively be the creation of a state suicide service.
However, the margin by which MSPs voted to allow the legislation to continue was very small. With this in mind, SPUC will continue to urge every MSP to consider the great dangers inherent in assisted suicidelegislation and to focus their energies on ensuring we give everyone access to modern pain relief and the highest quality of palliative care.

I want to encourage you that, as with Kim Leadbeater's Westminster bill, this fight is far from over. As few as 8 MSPs need to change their vote at the next stage and we can defeat the bill. I want you to take heart in the fact that the margin was not much bigger. Those of you who reached out to your MSPs urging them to vote against are to thank for that!

Please keep hopeful, as I am, that we can defeat this.

With best wishes,
John Deighan
Chief Executive
