John -- Even aside from winning
his primary, Hank has had a really busy week!

Proposals that Hank has been talking about in Congress
for years have now become the foundation of the Democrats’
massive police reform legislation! The Atlanta Journal
Constitution reports that, “Some of the initiatives found in
congressional Democrats’ new policing bill are proposals U.S.
Rep. Hank Johnson authored years ago [...] Hank and U.S. Rep.
John Lewis are among the lawmakers whose work over the years is
credited with building the foundation upon which the Justice in
Policing Act was built.”

It’s easy to get discouraged by politics sometimes,
John, but progress can happen and is
possible. Hank has been leading the effort to reform the unjust
policing practices for years, but now people are beginning to
listen. Here are a few of Hank’s proposals that have been
incorporated into the Democrats’ efforts to hold police
departments accountable:

* Limiting the practice of gifting federally owned
military-grade equipment to local police departments;
* Making it easier to bring charges against law enforcement
officers accused of misconduct or excessive force;
* Giving states and the U.S. Department of Justice additional
tools to investigate police departments engaged in patterns of
discriminatory or unconstitutional policing practices;

Not only has he led the way on legislating, but as a
senior member of the Judiciary Committee Hank asked the tough
questions at an emotional police reform hearing this week where
George Floyd’s brother testified. Hank challenged “cooling off
periods” that require a 2-to-10 day wait before investigators can
question police officers involved in potentially abusive or
discriminatory shootings. This allows crooked cops to “get their
story straight” and impedes an independent investigation.

Finally, Hank took the case for police reform to MSNBC
where he argued that Republicans needed to stop obstructing and
get on board the cause of common-sense police reform. You can
check out his interview here.

This is important leadership from Hank, and we couldn’t
be more proud to be on his team. If you’re excited about the work
he’s doing, will you help him win re-election by making a
grassroots contribution?
