Salaams John xxxxxx,

The House Ways and Means Committee is about to vote on a dangerous bill that threatens the very core of nonprofit advocacy in America.

Nicknamed the Nonprofit Bill Killer, this legislation would allow the government to strip nonprofits of their tax-exempt status based on vague, unproven allegations—without charges, without due process, and without accountability.

This bill resurrects the worst parts of previously defeated legislation (H.R. 6408 and H.R. 9495) and gives the Treasury Department unchecked power to target and silence advocacy organizations—especially those speaking out against government actions.

If passed, this bill would:

  1. Abuse of Power: There is a potential for abuse of power by granting the Secretary of the Treasury unilateral authority to classify any non-profit as a terrorist-supporting organization.
  2. Due Process: This bill could lead to arbitrary or politically motivated designations, thereby unfairly stripping away the nonprofit status of organizations without due process.
  3. Accountability: The reliance on classified information in certain cases raises transparency and accountability issues, as it limits the ability of affected organizations to challenge the designation effectively.
  4. Chill Free Speech: The bill may stifle dissent as organizations refrain from supporting certain causes out of fear of being deemed terrorist supporters, impeding their ability to engage in legitimate advocacy and activism.

We must act now. Tell your Representative to vote to reject language on the Nonprofit Bill Killer during the upcoming Committee markup.

Democracy depends on free speech. Let’s protect it.

In solidarity,
