John,
On Friday, a federal judge in Vermont ordered the release of Rümeysa
Öztürk — the Tufts University student who had been held in ICE custody for
six weeks after being kidnapped by federal agents.
Rümeysa has now returned to Massachusetts as her legal battle continues.
As a reminder, officials targeted Rümeysa after she coauthored an op-ed in
her student newspaper. The Trump administration used extreme and alarming
tactics to silence her right to free speech — tactics that only strengthen
our resolve to defend our constitutional rights.
But Rümeysa is far from the only person being unjustly detained for
exercising their First Amendment rights.
ICE agents detained Mahmoud Khalil — a Columbia University student — over
two months ago, and he remains in custody alongside several other foreign
students and educators.
No one should ever be arrested or imprisoned for their political
views, John.
Free speech and expression belong to all of us. These are not privileges —
they are constitutional rights that apply to everyone, regardless of
immigration status.
We will keep fighting like hell to stop this administration’s illegal and
unconstitutional attacks on our rights.
