Marginalized communities reclaiming their power and uplifting one another are powerful tools for dismantling white supremacy, but we don’t talk enough about how we got here.

Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders were paid unlivable wages to work the most dangerous jobs necessary to build our country while being banned from attaining citizenship. In the 1940s, Japanese Americans were forced into internment camps. And as recently as the COVID Pandemic, we saw a devastating rise in hate crimes against the AAPI community and destruction of their businesses.

Centuries of systemic racism destroyed communities by dividing minority ethnic groups and pitting them against one another. This system had a clear, malicious intent: divide and conquer.

But now, we can heal by building our collective power through our local economy. That’s why this AAPI Heritage Month, I’m focused on uplifting San Diego’s local AAPI businesses. Click here to share some of your favorites in your area: [link removed] [[link removed]]
