Fellow activist,
There is a major voter suppression bill continuing to make its way through the Pennsylvania House, and we are sounding the alarm.
House Bill 771, which was introduced by Representative Thomas Mehaffie (R-Dauphin), aims to make it more difficult to vote by amending the PA Election Code to implement new restrictive voter ID requirements.
As Representative Malcolm Kenyatta (D-Philadelphia) stated, “If you want people to have faith in [the] election system, don’t lie about the election system” (Politics PA). Pennsylvania's elections have been proven safe and secure for many years, yet some state lawmakers insist on making voting less and less convenient by imposing new, unnecessary voter ID provisions based on fabricated issues.
Pennsylvania's current voter ID law is more than adequate to protect elections; new requirements won't do anything to improve that and will disenfranchise voters.
Once again, GOP leaders in PA are working to strip away voting rights from eligible voters. We must fight back: As a voting rights organization, we are vehemently opposed to making it more difficult for voters to make their voices heard.
