The Scalise Capitol Report

Demanding Accountability for Avoidable Nursing Home Tragedies

The Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Crisis hosted a briefing this week where I demanded accountability for decisions that led to thousands of needless deaths in nursing homes across America. COVID-19 is an insidious and evil enemy, and we must protect those who are most vulnerable. Nursing home residents make up 0.6% of the U.S. population but account for 42% of nationwide COVID-19 deaths. This is unacceptable and sadly was largely avoidable. Click here to watch my opening remarks.

Visiting Bollinger Shipyards

Since 1984, Bollinger Shipyards has designed and built over 160 patrol vessels for the U.S. Coast Guard. This week, I visited with Bollinger Shipyard employees, as well as U.S. Coast Guard personnel training on site at the shipyard, to see how these ships are made from start to finish at their facility in Lockport, Louisiana. It was an honor to see how the highly skilled craftsmen at Bollinger Shipyards build the Fast Response Cutter’s (FRCs) which are so critical to the U.S. Coast Guard mission and U.S. national security.

Community Updates

  • As of June 6, businesses in Louisiana have received over $7 billion in funding from the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP). Along with the PPP improvements signed into law last week, this is great news for small businesses trying to get back on their feet and keep employees on the payroll.

  • In May, the U.S. economy gained 2.5 million jobs – the largest single month increase in history! After a long and difficult few months, the American recovery has begun, and we must keep this recovery moving forward.

  • Orleans Parish entered Phase 2 of economic reopening today. Click here to see what businesses are permitted to open under Phase 2 guidelines, which businesses must remain closed, and how Orleans Parish will differ from the rest of the state.

  • I joined Fox and Friends this week to discuss how abuse of power within law enforcement must be met with swift justice. We must pass reforms to protect human dignity, ensure equal treatment, and hold people who abuse their authority accountable—while recognizing the critical role law enforcement officers play in protecting our communities. The "defund the police" movement is not a serious solution, weakens the rule of law, and puts people at risk.

  • As our country begins to reopen the economy, the need for blood is expected to increase as hospitals resume elective surgeries. The American Red Cross urges blood donations in honor of World Blood Donor Day on Sunday, June 14th.

It is an honor to represent you in Congress. For more information please visit my website, Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook pages.
