For months, Republicans in Congress have been working with the Trump administration behind closed doors to put together what the President calls “a big beautiful bill.” The text of this legislation has just been released — and it’s as awful as we feared it would be.

As the Ranking Member on the House Committee on Ways and Means Oversight Subcommittee, I promise to hold Republicans accountable this week as this bill comes before our committee. It’s bad economic policy, and it’s an unconscionable giveaway to the richest people in our nation at the expense of critical programs that millions of Americans rely on.

Quite simply, this bill would cut hundreds of billions of dollars from Medicaid, SNAP, and other vital programs to fund tax breaks and handouts for billionaires. As if that wasn’t enough, it would also end critical subsidies for the Affordable Care Act that have allowed millions of Americans to afford health insurance plans.

We can’t allow this bill to pass: Elon Musk and other billionaires don’t need handouts, especially when it comes at the expense of federal programs relied on by millions of Americans to put food on the table or afford their prescriptions.
