We’ve seen Congress’ proposed budget, and it's bad news. We have a new action alert out with updates on the federal budget here. Check it out and learn how you can take action to save Medicaid!

Here’s what we are up against:

  • The proposed budget has the biggest cuts to Medicaid in our history (625 billion dollars).
  • The combined cuts to Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act will take health coverage away from 13.7 million people, according to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office.
  • People with disabilities are already struggling to get health care coverage and support services. Any kind of Medicaid cuts will make the problem worse. People will die waiting for care, or be forced into institutions.

Now is the time to call, email, or meet with your Representative and Senators saying you oppose Medicaid cuts. Please do this even if you think they do not support cuts to Medicaid because of things they have said or their political party. Please do this even if you think they do support cuts. Hearing that Medicaid matters to their constituents can make members of Congress who already oppose cuts fight harder — and it can make those who already support cuts give up.

You can use our script:

“Hi, my name is [your name]. I am a constituent of [Representative or Senator] [their last name]. I am calling today to ask the [Representative/Senator] to tell their committee to protect Medicaid from cuts and harmful changes for anyone currently receiving services. Please tell them that I do not want cuts to Medicaid. I do not want anyone to lose coverage or to receive less benefits. Any cuts will cause [your state] to cut services. I also do not want changes that add more rules to who can get Medicaid, like job loss penalties or more frequent disability verification. Thank you.”

You can find out who your Representative and Senator are here.

Need some help knowing what to expect during your call? Check out this resource.

There are also Congressional Recesses from May 23rd to June 3rd and June 7th to June 23rd. During a Congressional Recess, Senators go back to their states. Representatives also go back to the part of the state they represent.

This a great time to schedule an in-person meeting with your Representative or Senators. Your Representative or Senators may hold a meeting with the people they represent during the Congressional Recess. These meetings are usually called town hall meetings. You can go to the town hall and say you do not want cuts or harmful changes to Medicaid. There may be protests and other actions you can join as well.

However you speak up, we’ll be right there with you. Thank you for taking action to protect Medicaid!
