As the first openly gay Senator in United States history, my commitment to equality isn’t just political — it’s personal.

From Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” bill to laws in Iowa and Mississippi that target medical professionals who provide gender-affirming care to minors, LGBTQ+ Americans’ fundamental freedoms and civil rights are under attack by extremist Republicans across the country.

And since the Trump administration is actively working to unravel all the progress we’ve made in recent years, it’s time to pass federal legislation that affirms that every American should be treated equally under the law.

That’s why I joined my Democratic colleagues in reintroducing the Equality Act to guarantee every LGBTQ+ American the full freedom of equality and protection under federal law.

We’ve made incredible advances in equality for LGBTQ+ Americans in recent years, like passing my Respect for Marriage Act to protect same-sex and interracial marriages, but our work is far from over.
