John,
Our Minnesota state flag has deep roots in history with a seal that goes back
to our days as a territory. Blue banners bearing that very seal were carried by
our regiments in the U.S. Civil war, including the storied 1st Minnesota, which
fought at Gettysburg.
For decades and decades, Minnesotans proudly flew a flag that told our story,
all of it: the settlers who cleared the land and made Minnesota home. The
encounters with Native Americans. And the farmers, tradesmen, and families who
weathered many hardships to build a life with their own hands, a faith in God,
and a belief in the American Dream.
But the WOKE Democrats in St. Paul didn’t see it that way.
Governor Tim Walz called the flag “problematic,” while DFL legislators led the
charge to replace it—and they succeeded.
That’s why, in honor of Minnesota Statehood Day, we’re celebrating the
original state flag with go-everywhere koozies featuring its historic design.
