They were sheltering in a school.

Not firing rockets. Not carrying weapons.

Just trying to stay alive.

But yesterday, an Israeli airstrike hit the Fatima Bint Asad School in the Jabalia refugee camp — a place where displaced families were sleeping on classroom floors.

Sixteen people died. Five of them were children. Four were women. All of them were civilians.

This wasn’t the first strike on a supposed “safe zone.” And all of it happened as ceasefire negotiations are underway.

It begs the question: How do you negotiate peace when shelters become targets?
