Indiana Governor Mike Braun signed into law Tuesday a bill that requires hospitals to lower prices or lose their non-profit status.
House Bill 1004 requires Indiana’s non-profit hospital systems to submit audited financial statements and work to lower inpatient and outpatient prices to the statewide average.
The bill passed through the Senate on April 29 and was signed into law by the Governor, who gave hospitals currently in nonprofit status until June 2029 to abide by the requirements or face losing nonprofit status.
When the bill was first introduced in January, Devin Anderson, with the advocacy group Hoosiers for Affordable Healthcare, applauded the bill, calling it the most significant piece of legislation in Indiana in recent years to curb hospital prices, which he said are the ninth highest in the country.
His group provided numbers that demonstrated what the bill’s passage could mean:
- Ascension St. Vincent: Reduce prices by 40.5%
- Parkview Health: Reduce prices by 40.8%
- Community Health Network: Reduce prices by 34%
- Deaconess Health System: Reduce prices by 23%
- Franciscan Health: Reduce prices by 30%
- IU Health: Reduce prices by 40.6%
According to the bill, by June 30, 2029, it requires an “Indiana nonprofit hospital system’s aggregate average inpatient and outpatient hospital prices to be at least equal to or less than the statewide average. States that a violation by the Indiana nonprofit hospital system results in a forfeiture of its nonprofit status.”
WANE 15 previously spoke with Beth Lock, Director of Government and Legislative Affairs at Parkview Health, who said, “We look forward to working with the Indiana General Assembly to evaluate the impact this bill may have on non-profit hospitals and find meaningful solutions to lower the cost of healthcare.”
