Dear John,
As protests continue across the U.S. in support of Black Lives Matter, we want to again thank everyone who has taken action to defund the police and demand investment in our communities.
With many cities beginning to reopen, we also cannot forget the hundreds of thousands of individuals—disproportionately Black and Brown people—who remain locked up in prisons, jails, and detention centers nationwide in this pandemic, where they face higher risks for COVID-19. Please tell your governor and Immigration and Customs Enforcement: Protect incarcerated people from COVID-19!
Here are this week’s resources to help you stay informed and support your activism.
Reimagining community safety: As Minneapolis and other U.S. cities take steps to defund the police, we look at how we can invest in creating more humane alternatives to truly keep our communities safe.
How white people can support the call to defund the police: Mila Hamilton, a Quaker who lives in Minneapolis, writes, “We are being asked to listen, talk less, support only in ways that we are directly asked to, and engage in true accompaniment.”
Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has announced plans to move forward with annexation of the West Bank: Tell Congress: Oppose Israeli annexation of Palestinian territory!
Helping Kenyans protect themselves from COVID-19: Thanks to supporters like you, AFSC and local partners are providing food, personal protective equipment, hygiene supplies, and information to community members in the Mathare settlement in Nairobi.
The Supreme Court could rule on the fate of DACA any day now: Here’s what could happen and how you can stand with hundreds of thousands of DACA recipients in calling for a roadmap to citizenship for all immigrants.
Sign up for the digital Mass Poor People's Assembly & Moral March on Washington: On June 20 and 21, join a mass digital gathering of people with low income, religious leaders, advocates, and others as we share stories and solutions to systemic racism, poverty, and militarism in our communities.
Be well and take care.
