John,

Clean, safe drinking water is something most Americans take for granted.

But with more than 9 million lead pipes stretching beneath our streets, safe drinking water isn't the guarantee we're led to believe it is.[1]

No amount of lead in the body is considered safe. Exposure to this toxic metal through drinking water has been linked to all kinds of health issues.[2]

That's why it's so absurd that Congress is considering rolling back the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)'s 10-year deadline for removing these lead pipes.[3]

Tell your U.S. representative: Don't undo progress to get lead out of our drinking water.

Lead exposure can have devastating effects. In adults, it's been known to decrease kidney function and cause cardiovascular problems.

Among children and infants, even low levels of lead can cause nervous system damage, hearing impairment, and learning disabilities.[4]

Last year, we won a critical victory when the EPA finalized a 10-year deadline for most communities to replace lead service lines.[5]

But some water utility lobbyists -- and their allies in Congress -- are trying to kill this deadline. Leaving lead pipes in place means that millions of children would be drinking water that could have toxic lead in it.

Don't let lobbyists put our wellbeing on the back burner: Tell your U.S. representative to vote against this rollback.

If approved, this rollback would not only nix the lead pipe deadline but also prevent the EPA from adopting broader rules to address lead in our drinking water.[6]

Lead service lines are the single largest source of lead in water for homes served by them. There is absolutely no reason why we should still be getting our drinking water from these toxic pipes.[7]

With the health of our children on the line, there is no time to waste.

Urge your U.S. representative to prioritize the health of our communities and maintain the EPA's lead pipe deadline.
