MOTHER'S DAY & THE

LIBERATION OF WOMEN

On a phone call last week with Don & Veralyn Adams, old friends from Tucson, Arizona, we were discussing holidays and birthdays.

I was complaining about Christmas and how on that day everyone but the one whose day of birth we are celebrating receives presents.  I want to say to my children and grandchildren, “It is not your birthday, so why are you getting presents?”

Not to be outdone, Don said that each person, on their birthday, owed a gift to their mother.  It is mother who did the work on that day.  Mother made that day's big event possible. Mother made all the days that followed possible.

I could not have been more impressed yesterday when I read for the first time an article published a year ago by New York Times editorial assistant, Raina Raskin.  It was published May 11, 2024 by The Free Press.

Raina told the story about how discovering motherhood through the birth of her daughter set her free.  In an age when men are no longer men and women are no longer women, Raina’s bold article is a breath of fresh air.

This very intelligent, ambitious, and resourceful woman had sought to define herself by becoming a valuable commodity in the marketplace.  She sought to become what would be met with approval in any variety of social settings.

All this and more until her daughter turned six weeks old.  At six weeks, her daughter transformed her mother’s life.  She smiled at her mother.

From that moment on, it was non-stop bonding through silly sounds, impish squeals, and the insipid little “Itsy Bitsy Spider.”

It was the smile that eviscerated the value of status markers, Instagrams, and Ivy League acceptance letters.

Raina concludes her comments by rejoicing in the liberation motherhood brought her.  She writes:

It was my daughter’s love that freed me from my delusions of grandeur. It liberated me from the tyranny of trying to prove myself. Since her birth, I feel calmer and more secure. I have a sense of security I haven’t felt since I was a young child, living with parents who unconditionally loved me.

The most prominent women in human history gained their prominence through motherhood.  The hand of God moved the trajectory of history through his ordination of the miraculous conceptions of Sarah, Hannah, and Mary.  Rachel gave her life to give birth to Benjamin, the son who gave the world the Apostle Paul.

Mary was clearly knowledgeable of the Scripture, as her poetic praise of the one she would bear, who would be not only her Savior, but the Savior of the world is a text sung the world over through Bach’s Magnificat.

“My soul magnifies the Lord, and

my spirit rejoices in God my Savior.”

~Luke 1:46, 47

The Magnificat, based on Luke 1:46-55, was Bach’s first major choral work.  He composed it after his appointment in Leipzig in the spring of 1723.

The Netherland’s Bach Society's

presentation would make

Mary proud!

May God raise up a generation of men

and women who embrace

their roles.

And, on behalf of all of

us, thank God for

our mothers!
