This is not the first time America has faced such a test. From the brave
conductors of the Underground Railroad to the Sanctuary Movement of the 1980s,
there is a proud tradition in this country of ordinary people and local leaders
resisting unjust and immoral government actions. Those moments demanded
courage. This one does, too.

We are calling on elected local leaders to publicly oppose these immigration
enforcement actions and commit to ensuring that they and their communities will
not cooperate voluntarily with federal immigration enforcement agencies that
seek to detain or deport community members unless legally compelled by a
judicial warrant or other due process.

We are witnessing a time when fear is being weaponized, and the fabric of our
communities is being torn apart. Families are living in terror. Neighbors are
disappearing. Legal rights are being eroded. And yet, we know that our local
leaders have the power — and the responsibility — to act with moral clarity.

We ask local leaders to:

* Refuse to cooperate with federal agencies involved in unjust immigration
enforcement.

* Provide sanctuary and protection to those at risk of detention and
deportation.

* Uphold due process and human rights, regardless of federal pressure.

* Join a growing movement of leaders and communities who are saying “no more.”
This is a moment to lead — not just in governance, but in conscience. When
future generations look back on this era, they will ask:Did you comply with
injustice, or did you resist it?

We urge local leaders to follow in the footsteps of those who, throughout
American history, stood up for compassion, dignity, and the core values of
freedom and justice.
