Newsletter of the Goethe-Institut Washington

Dear Friends,

The Goethe-Institut Washington stands in solidarity with the Black community against acts of violence rooted in hatred and racism. We would like to express our condolences to the loved ones of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and many other victims of anti-Black violence. We want to express our solidarity with the protesters demanding justice and with our Black colleagues, students, and community members.

As a foreign arts and culture organization, we recognize that our role is to listen, learn, and support. Our efforts at promoting a transatlantic relationship between Germany and the United States would be for naught if we stood by in silence during a time of great unrest and upheaval. We commit to educating ourselves and others, and creating positive change within our organization, community, and society. Our institute is privileged to be located in a neighborhood rich with Black history, culture, and activism, and we stand with our neighbors in this time.

Goethe Book Club Goes Digital: Sasha Marianna Salzmann's Beside Myself (2017/2020)

Beside Myself is the disturbing and exhilarating story of a family across four generations. At its heart is one woman’s search for her twin brother. When Anton goes missing and the only clue is a postcard sent from Istanbul, Alissa leaves her life in Berlin to find him. Without her twin, the sharer of her memories and the mirror of her own self, Ali is lost.

In a city steeped in political and social changes, where you can buy gender-changing drugs on the street, Ali’s search—for her missing brother, for her identity—will take her on a journey for connection and belonging.

Beside Myself is a brilliant literary debut about belonging, about family and love, and about the enigmatic nature of identity.

Shaping the Past

How does the past take shape? What happens in the process of coming to terms with the past? What social repercussions are associated with the rooting of history in monuments and memorials? How can those narratives be shifted or upended through alternative, innovative approaches to memorialization? These questions and many others are at the center of our project Shaping the Past, a partnership between Monument Lab, the Goethe-Institut, and the Bundeszentrale für politische Bildung (German Federal Agency for Civic Education/bpb).
